Improving the Effectiveness of your Audit Committee

Chris Swinson OBE, the Comptroller & Auditor General of the States of Jersey led this workshop for chairs of audit committees and other more experienced audit committee members. in addition to his role with the States of Jersey Chris Swinson serves on a number of public sector boards and audit committees. He is a former chair of the Audit Committee for HM Treasury.

This workshop was an opportunity for members of audit committees to air issues they have and discuss solutions in a peer and supportive environment. The session was structured around issues of topical interest to audit committee members who represented a cross section of Northern ireland's public authorities.

The programme, which was discussion based, covered:

• Membership of committees
• Skills, knowledge, commitment, behaviours
• Relationships with accounting officers, the executive, internal and external auditors, and the Northern Ireland Audit Office
• What success looks like (openness, risk, confidence)
• Things that often go wrong
• Remedies
