The Digital Switchover in Northern Ireland

June 12 2012

One of the biggest infrastructural changes to take place in all our lifetimes is going on around us unseen and unnoticed by most people and yet it is likely to affect every man, woman and child in Northern Ireland.

The UK's five-year programme of digital television switchovers, which began in the Border television region in 2008, is due to be completed in October 2012 in Northern Ireland when the last analogue transmitters will be switched off . Digital terrestrial television will not only mean more channels, more choice and better quality television for everyone it will also free up valuable spectrum for other major infrastructural developments such as mobile broadband.

The Switchover is being co-ordinated north and south of the border. Analogue television services are due to be switched off across the UK and the Republic of Ireland on 24 October 2012.
