'Communicating in a Crisis'

October 08 2008

Most organisations including public bodies have a crisis or disaster plan, but it's remarkable how few include a section on dealing with the media.

Yet news coverage can turn a relatively minor event into a major, and often politically and or financially damaging one. Knowing how to deal with newspapers, radio and television at such times can make all the difference to the organisation's image for competence, professionalism and even integrity.

This workshop involved roleplay with participants working as a team dealing with a crisis in real time. It was replete with mock radio news broadcasts and newspaper enquiries. The object of the exercise was to manage the situation and minimise loss or damage, particularly reputational damage.

The course leaders were Mike Philpott and Ray Hayden, the co-presenters of the highly successful 'Making The Soundbite Count' media workshop.

Mike and Ray have wide experience on both sides of the news business and have dealt with a number of real-life crises on behalf of companies as well as voluntary and public sector organisations.
