The economic challenges facing Northern Ireland are profound and, mewly elected representatives will thinking carefully about the policies required to transform the economy into one that delivers for all of its citizens.
Whatever the result of the forthcoming election the outlook for the next parliament is one of continued restraint in public finances and a sustained focus on reform, be it of the welfare state, the health service or public service in general. Providing strong leadership, working with policy makers to understand and address issues and making a genuine contribution to the performance of the Northern Ireland economy are the key challenges for new parliamentarians, their advisors and public sector leaders.
Our speaker, Professor Neil Gibson, is head of the Ulster University Economic Policy Centre (formerly the NI Centre for Economic Policy - NICEP), an independent economic research centre focussed on producing evidence based research to inform policy development and implementation. The Centre engages with all organisations that have an interest in enhancing the Northern Ireland economy and its work is relevant to Government, business and the wider general public.
He is an alumnus of the University of Ulster who is also one of the best known media commentators on the Northern Ireland economy.
Professor Gibson graduated from the University of Ulster in 1999 and joined Oxford Economics in 2007 as a Director. In his role in Oxford Economics he has led a wide range of international projects with a focus on economic forecasting and policy advice. He has also been involved in a number of key policy areas in Northern Ireland including the Corporation Tax debate, the successful Derry~Londonderry City of Culture bid and the region's skills policy.
This briefing will look at the economic outlook under whatever government is in power and how that might impact the local economy. Professor Gibson will also look at the challenge a sustained financial environment will present local leaders and discuss the implications of a move towards a more outcomes-focussed approach, and away from the input-heavy focus that prevails today in many areas of public expenditure.
