Gender Equality Issues at Executive Level in the Northern Ireland Public Sector

October 22 2015

The issue of gender equality within executive and non-executive director positions has received considerable attention in the private sector. However, substantially less is known about gender equality issues within senior or executive levels of the public sector, including that in Northern Ireland

This briefing will address gaps in our understanding of gender equality issues within the NI public sector by presenting the results of a three year research project which aimed to:

  • provide base line data on various aspects of gender equality;
  • identify enablers, barriers, and best practice towards achieving greater gender equality; and
  • engage in meaningful consultation with key stakeholders.

Professor Joan Ballantine will outline findings from the OFMDFM sponsored research which focuses on the experience and perceptions of current and aspiring female executives. The seminar will examine strategic issues surrounding gender equality and argue that responsibility must rest at the top of organisations.

Our speaker: Professor Joan Ballantine is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountant (FCCA). She gained extensive lecturing experience at Warwick Business School, Queen's University and more recently Ulster University. During her time at Warwick she gained her doctorate and was heavily involved in developing and delivering executive education and consultancy to a range of organisations. Her research areas include gender equality in leadership roles and performance measurement and management in the public sector. Joan and her colleagues Dr Graeme Banks and Mr Tony Wall, Ulster University have collaborated on the research project between August 2012 and August 2015.
