Chief Executives typically regard the HR function as operational and administrative. Recent work by the CIPD shows that in high performing organisations in both the public and private sectors, HR is being used to develop and deliver a people agenda matched to business strategy.
This session considered the importance of having effective talent management systems and processes in the organisation. The organisation in question was Royal Mail and the speaker was Pamela Stevenson, HR Director Royal Mail Northern Ireland.
Pamela Stevenson began her career in accountancy before moving into the HR field in 1990 when she joined the Simon Community as Director of Finance and Personnel. Since then Pamela has worked for a major electronic company, Insilco Technologies, in both their Larne and Galway plants as HR Director Europe. She also worked in North Carolina, South Caroline and Florida, also with Insilco Technologies, which gave her experience of differing approaches to HR. Later Pamela worked for Eircom NI before moving in 2003 to her current role as HR Director NI for Royal Mail, at a time when Royal Mail were embarking on the biggest organisational and tranformational change in the UK - a truly challenging role!
Royal Mail employs around 3,700 people in Northern Ireland to process and deliver mail to and from 7070 addresses in the region.
